Dog IVDD back surgery in South Africa: costs, signs and cover

A slipped disc can take a dog from running to dragging their back legs in a day. Here's what IVDD surgery involves and what to ask about cover.

Quick answer

Published South African figures put it at around R39,000 (a paid IVDD claim published by South African insurer administrator GENRIC). Your bill depends on how sick your pet is, how long they stay in hospital, tests, medication and whether a specialist is needed. Ask your vet for a written estimate. Insurance only helps if cover is already active and the waiting period has passed. OnePlan publishes a 60-day illness hospital waiting period and plans from R80 per pet per month.

Dear Pet Parent,

This morning your dog was fine.

Now they cry when you pick them up.

Or their back legs aren't working.

Back emergencies don't wait. Neither should your cover.

The condition

What is IVDD?

Intervertebral disc disease happens when a disc between the bones of the spine bulges or bursts and presses on the spinal cord.

Long-backed breeds like Dachshunds, Beagles and French Bulldogs are at higher risk. Mild cases may be treated with strict rest and medication. Severe cases often need an MRI or CT scan and surgery.

Warning signs

Go to the vet if you see these

Speed matters with spinal cases. Don't wait overnight.

  • Crying when touched or lifted
  • A hunched back
  • Wobbly or weak back legs
  • Dragging the back legs
  • Losing bladder control

The bill

What drives the cost

That figure is one published paid claim, not an average. Scans, specialist surgery and rehab can move the bill up or down.

These are published estimates, not a quote. Ask your vet for a written estimate and what could change it.

  • MRI or CT scan to find the disc
  • Specialist spinal surgery
  • Days in hospital
  • Pain medication
  • Physio and rehab afterwards

Why pet parents explore cover early

Accidents do not wait for payday

Accident hospital admission cover can start immediately, subject to eligibility and policy terms.

Keep the vet you already trust

OnePlan works with vets nationwide. The payment process can differ by vet and treatment.

Understand the details before you need them

Five plan options have different prices, benefits and limits. Waiting periods and exclusions matter too.

Tests and scans add up

Day-to-day benefits on some plans help with vet visits such as blood tests and x-rays, within plan limits.

Routine care counts too

Some plans include routine care benefits for things like vaccinations and deworming. Ask what yours includes.

Ask about dental and parasites

Dental and tick or flea care sit under specific benefits with their own limits. Check before you rely on them.

Real situations. Real outcomes.

Insurance

Does pet insurance help with this?

IVDD is usually treated as an illness, so OnePlan's 60-day illness waiting period applies in current public materials.

For high-risk breeds, ask OnePlan how back problems and hereditary conditions are assessed, and what the surgery sub-limit is on your plan.

P.S. In a rush? Here's the short version

Vet bills add up fast. Bloat surgery alone can cost R16,000 to R20,000 at a referral hospital. OnePlan cover starts from R80 per pet a month, depending on your pet, with limits up to R75,000 a year on Super.

P.P.S. Timing matters

Pre-existing conditions are generally excluded, so once a vet notes a symptom, that problem may not be covered. Illness hospital cover also has a 60-day waiting period. The best time to sort cover is while your pet is healthy, not in the waiting room at 2am.

P.P.P.S. There's no risk in looking
