Dear Pet Parent Balancing the Household Budget,

You love your pet. You also have a budget to stick to. Both things are true, and neither makes you a bad pet parent.

Maybe you've had a surprise vet visit before. A limp after the park. A tummy that wouldn't settle. The bill arrived before you'd had time to think.

Pet insurance won't stop those days. It can make them easier to plan for.

The cheapest plan isn't always the cheapest choice.

“It gives me as a fur baby mom breathing space in medical situations.”

A low premium looks good on paper. But if the annual limit runs out halfway through a hospital stay, you're paying the rest yourself.

So this guide gives you the real numbers. What OnePlan's five plans cost right now. What changes your price. And how to pick cover you'll actually use.

When you want your own price, take the quick quiz. OnePlan may call to talk it through. No card. No obligation.

Quick answer

OnePlan's pet cover starts at R80 per pet per month for accident-only cover. Plans with broader cover start from R160, R190, R280 and R430 per month, with annual limits up to R75,000. Your price depends on your pet and chosen plan.

Quick pet quiz • No card required • OnePlan may call

The real question

It's not 'what does cover cost'. It's 'what does no cover cost'.

Most people start looking at pet insurance after a scare. A swallowed sock. A limp that won't go away. A late-night drive to the emergency vet.

Vet care in South Africa is private. You pay the bill, and hospital stays, surgery and diagnostics add up fast. Many vets also ask for a deposit before an admission.

So the honest comparison is simple. A fixed monthly premium you can plan for, against a large bill you can't predict. This guide shows you what that premium looks like right now.

What drives your premium

Five things that decide your monthly price

Two pets on the same plan can pay different amounts. Here's why.

  • The plan you choose. Accident-only costs far less than broad hospital and day-to-day cover.
  • Species. Dogs and cats are priced differently.
  • Breed. Some breeds carry more known health risks than others.
  • Age. Older pets usually cost more to cover, and age rules apply at sign-up.
  • Number of pets. Eligible plans get 10% off from the second pet.

Compare like with like

What each OnePlan starting price buys you

The R80 Accident plan is the lowest advertised starting point. It is built for accident hospital admission and does not include illness. Its published overall annual limit is R8,500. That can suit an owner who wants a basic accident safety net and understands the trade-off.

Primary starts from R160 a month with an R18,000 overall annual limit. Hospital starts from R190 with an R48,500 limit. Classic starts from R280 with an R52,000 limit, while Super starts from R430 and has OnePlan's highest published overall annual limit of R75,000.

Those numbers do not make one plan automatically better. A plan should be judged by the benefits you expect to use, the limits inside those benefits and the amount you can carry yourself. Ask for the policy wording before deciding.

Do the full calculation

Turn the monthly premium into an annual decision

A monthly price is easy to compare, but insurance is an annual commitment. Multiply the quoted monthly premium by 12, then compare that figure with the annual limit and the benefits that matter to you. This does not predict whether you will claim. It simply helps you judge what you pay for the protection offered.

For more than one pet, calculate each quoted premium separately. OnePlan currently publishes a 10% multi-pet discount from the second pet on eligible Primary, Hospital, Classic and Super plans. The Accident plan is excluded. The discount does not mean every pet will have the same premium because each pet can have a different risk profile.

Why pet parents explore cover early

Accidents do not wait for payday

Accident hospital admission cover can start immediately, subject to eligibility and policy terms.

Keep the vet you already trust

OnePlan works with vets nationwide. The payment process can differ by vet and treatment.

Understand the details before you need them

Five plan options have different prices, benefits and limits. Waiting periods and exclusions matter too.

Tests and scans add up

Day-to-day benefits on some plans help with vet visits such as blood tests and x-rays, within plan limits.

Routine care counts too

Some plans include routine care benefits for things like vaccinations and deworming. Ask what yours includes.

Ask about dental and parasites

Dental and tick or flea care sit under specific benefits with their own limits. Check before you rely on them.

Real situations. Real outcomes.

The mechanism

How help with vet bills works

Two simple routes. Which one you use depends on the kind of care your pet needs.

Everyday eligible care

Pay at the vet with your Claim Card

  1. 1

    Request

Ask for available day-to-day funds in the OnePlan app.

  2. 2

    Load

Approved eligible funds go onto your OnePlan Claim Card.

  3. 3

    Pay

Use the card toward the vet bill. No waiting for a refund.

Hospital and emergencies

Get the admission pre-authorised

  1. 1

    Call

Contact OnePlan for pre-authorisation, after hours too.

  2. 2

    Check

OnePlan checks the admission against your policy.

  3. 3

    Treat

Your vet follows the approved payment process.

What you can claim depends on your plan. Hospital treatment needs pre-authorisation.

Cheap versus right

How to pick a plan without overpaying or underinsuring

Start with your biggest fear. If it's a car accident or a bad fall, accident-only cover may be enough. If it's illness, look at plans with illness hospital cover.

Then check the annual limit. A low premium with a low limit can leave you short in a bad year. OnePlan's limits range from R8,500 on Accident to R75,000 on Super.

Finally, check timing. Accident hospital admission cover starts immediately. Illness hospital admission has a 60-day waiting period. Starting sooner means you're covered sooner.

Read the fine print

Costs and conditions to ask about

Good cover is honest about its limits. Ask the consultant about these before you commit.

  • Sub-limits on specific benefits, not just the overall annual limit.
  • Waiting periods for each benefit, which differ by plan.
  • How pre-existing, hereditary and congenital conditions are treated.
  • Hospital pre-authorisation and whether a deposit applies at your vet.

Before you accept a quote

Seven questions that make a price comparison more honest

The cheapest quote can become expensive if it leaves out the treatment you expected. Use the OnePlan call to turn a headline price into a practical comparison for your own pet.

  • What is my exact monthly premium, and can it change at renewal?
  • Which hospital and day-to-day benefits are included on this plan?
  • What are the overall annual limit and the important benefit sub-limits?
  • Which waiting periods apply from my policy start date?
  • How would an existing symptom or previous diagnosis be treated?
  • When must I get hospital pre-authorisation, and what happens after hours?
  • How does my regular vet handle deposits and the OnePlan Claim Card?

Avoid the common traps

Three mistakes pet owners make when comparing cost

First, they compare only the monthly number. A R20 difference means little if the plans have very different limits or cover different events. Second, they assume an annual limit is available for every type of treatment. Benefits can have their own limits and rules inside the overall amount.

Third, they wait until a pet is already unwell. Insurance is designed for uncertain future events, not a known bill that has already appeared. A condition that exists before cover starts may be treated as pre-existing, and illness hospital cover has a 60-day waiting period in OnePlan's current public information.

The sensible time to compare is while your pet is well and you can read without pressure. Keep the quote, benefit schedule and policy wording together. If something is unclear, ask OnePlan to explain it before you agree.
