Dear Pet Parent,

You notice a cloudy look in your dog's eye.

Then they start bumping into furniture at night.

Your vet mentions cataracts and a referral to a specialist.

Specialist surgery is where annual limits and sub-limits really matter.

“It gives me as a fur baby mom breathing space in medical situations.”
Rene N, pet owner · published customer feedback

Here's a real number. Valley Farm Animal Hospital's referral price list (November 2025) puts it at R35,000 to R45,000.

Your vet's quote may be higher or lower. Fees vary by practice, region and how serious things are.

If you'd like cover in place before the next emergency, take the quick quiz and OnePlan will talk you through options.

Quick answer

Published South African figures put it at R35,000 to R45,000 (Valley Farm Animal Hospital's referral price list (November 2025)). Your bill depends on how sick your pet is, how long they stay in hospital, tests, medication and whether a specialist is needed. Ask your vet for a written estimate. Insurance only helps if cover is already active and the waiting period has passed. OnePlan publishes a 60-day illness hospital waiting period and plans from R80 per pet per month.

The condition

What are cataracts in pets?

A cataract clouds the lens of the eye and can lead to blindness. Causes include genetics, age and diabetes.

Surgery is usually done by a veterinary ophthalmologist after eye tests to check your pet is a good candidate.

Warning signs

Signs to mention to your vet

Early checks help your vet plan the next step.

  • Cloudy or bluish-white eyes
  • Bumping into things, especially in dim light
  • Reluctance to use stairs or jump
  • Red or watery eyes

The bill

What drives the cost

Valley Farm Animal Hospital in Pretoria lists cataract surgery at R35,000 to R37,000 for one eye and R42,000 to R45,000 for both eyes, including ERG and ultrasound.

Before surgery there's a workup with consultation, ERG and ultrasound at R4,000 to R5,000. A replacement lens is R3,200 per lens, and a specialist anaesthetist is R3,120.

That's more than half of OnePlan's highest published annual limit of R75,000 on Super, from one procedure. Check sub-limits before you need them.

These are published estimates, not a quote. Ask your vet for a written estimate and what could change it.

  • Specialist consultation and eye tests
  • One eye or both eyes
  • Surgery and anaesthetic
  • Follow-up visits and eye drops
  • Underlying conditions such as diabetes

Why pet parents explore cover early

Accidents do not wait for payday

Accident hospital admission cover can start immediately, subject to eligibility and policy terms.

Keep the vet you already trust

OnePlan works with vets nationwide. The payment process can differ by vet and treatment.

Understand the details before you need them

Five plan options have different prices, benefits and limits. Waiting periods and exclusions matter too.

Tests and scans add up

Day-to-day benefits on some plans help with vet visits such as blood tests and x-rays, within plan limits.

Routine care counts too

Some plans include routine care benefits for things like vaccinations and deworming. Ask what yours includes.

Ask about dental and parasites

Dental and tick or flea care sit under specific benefits with their own limits. Check before you rely on them.

Real situations. Real outcomes.

Insurance

Does pet insurance help with this?

Ask whether specialist treatment is covered, what the surgery sub-limit is, and how hereditary or pre-existing eye conditions are treated.

A condition already noted before cover starts may be excluded. Starting cover early matters.
