Dear Pet Parent Doing Their Homework,

Good on you. Most people pick insurance the night before they need it. You're reading reviews first.

You want to know if OnePlan pays. How claims work at your vet. What it costs. And where the catches are.

Fair questions. Every one of them.

An honest look, including the limits.

“It gives me as a fur baby mom breathing space in medical situations.”
Rene N, pet owner · published customer feedback

We'll show you how OnePlan's plans line up, how the Claim Card works for eligible day-to-day care, and how hospital pre-authorisation works.

We'll also cover waiting periods, exclusions and annual limits. They matter as much as the price.

Cactus isn't OnePlan. We introduce you. If you'd like a call to ask OnePlan your own questions, take the quick quiz.

Quick answer

OnePlan offers five pet plans from R80 per pet per month, a Claim Card for eligible day-to-day claims, vets nationwide and up to R75,000 a year on Super. It publishes a 4.59/5 overall customer rating from 23,019 reviews. Waiting periods and terms apply.

The short version

What OnePlan is, and who stands behind it

OnePlan is a South African insurer brand offering pet and health cover. Pet policies are administered by OnePlan Underwriting Managers (Pty) Ltd, FSP 43628, and underwritten by Bryte Insurance Company Limited.

On its own site, OnePlan publishes an overall rating of 4.59 out of 5 from 23,019 reviews, with a 10/10 Trust Index. That's OnePlan's overall customer feedback, not a pet-only score, and not a Cactus rating.

Where it stands out

What OnePlan does differently

Most pet cover works on 'pay the vet, then claim back'. OnePlan has a few features aimed at that pain.

  • The OnePlan Claim Card, which can be loaded with eligible day-to-day claim funds.
  • Accident hospital admission cover that starts immediately, subject to terms.
  • Five plan levels, from R80 accident-only cover to the Super plan with up to R75,000 a year.
  • Vets nationwide, so you're not locked into one practice.
  • 10% off each pet from the second pet on eligible plans.

How we reviewed it

What this review checks, and what it does not claim

This review uses OnePlan's public 2026 pet-plan information, its published policy explanations and customer stories available on its website. We also distinguish the company's overall published customer rating from pet-specific testimonials. Product details can change, so the quote and policy wording you receive from OnePlan take priority.

Cactus is operated by Leads Elite (Pty) Ltd and may receive a referral fee when it introduces an enquiry. It is not OnePlan, Bryte, a financial adviser or a claims administrator. That commercial relationship is why this page shows the practical strengths and the limitations you should question before buying.

Last checked: 8 October 2026. We do not score OnePlan or declare it the best insurer because suitability depends on your pet, budget and the exclusions attached to your quote.

The practical difference

How the Claim Card and hospital claims differ

For eligible day-to-day benefits, OnePlan says you can request available claim funds in its app. Once approved, those funds can be loaded onto the OnePlan Claim Card for use toward the vet cost. This is subject to the benefit available on your plan and the claim being eligible.

Hospital treatment follows a different route. OnePlan needs to pre-authorise the admission and check it against the policy. The way a deposit or balance is handled can differ by vet and treatment, so the phrase 'use any vet' should not be read as a promise that every practice follows the same payment process.

A useful review therefore asks two questions: what does the policy cover, and what must the owner do at the moment of treatment? Read both the benefit schedule and the claims instructions.

Why pet parents explore cover early

Accidents do not wait for payday

Accident hospital admission cover can start immediately, subject to eligibility and policy terms.

Keep the vet you already trust

OnePlan works with vets nationwide. The payment process can differ by vet and treatment.

Understand the details before you need them

Five plan options have different prices, benefits and limits. Waiting periods and exclusions matter too.

Tests and scans add up

Day-to-day benefits on some plans help with vet visits such as blood tests and x-rays, within plan limits.

Routine care counts too

Some plans include routine care benefits for things like vaccinations and deworming. Ask what yours includes.

Ask about dental and parasites

Dental and tick or flea care sit under specific benefits with their own limits. Check before you rely on them.

Real situations. Real outcomes.

The mechanism

How help with vet bills works

Two simple routes. Which one you use depends on the kind of care your pet needs.

Everyday eligible care

Pay at the vet with your Claim Card

  1. 1

    Request

Ask for available day-to-day funds in the OnePlan app.

  2. 2

    Load

Approved eligible funds go onto your OnePlan Claim Card.

  3. 3

    Pay

Use the card toward the vet bill. No waiting for a refund.

Hospital and emergencies

Get the admission pre-authorised

  1. 1

    Call

Contact OnePlan for pre-authorisation, after hours too.

  2. 2

    Check

OnePlan checks the admission against your policy.

  3. 3

    Treat

Your vet follows the approved payment process.

What you can claim depends on your plan. Hospital treatment needs pre-authorisation.

Know before you sign

The things a fair review has to mention

No policy covers everything. These are the points worth asking about on the call.

  • Illness hospital admission has a 60-day waiting period.
  • Other benefits carry their own waiting periods, from 30 days to 12 months.
  • Pre-existing, hereditary and congenital conditions are subject to underwriting and exclusions.
  • Hospital claims need pre-authorisation. Deposit handling depends on your vet.
  • Advertised prices are starting prices. Your premium depends on your pet.

Our take

Who OnePlan is a good fit for

If you want a predictable monthly cost, the freedom to use your own vet and a claim process that doesn't always mean paying up front, OnePlan is worth a conversation.

If you only want the cheapest possible cover, check exactly what the Accident plan leaves out. It doesn't cover illness. The quiz is the quickest way to see which plan level makes sense for your pet.

Read reviews carefully

What customer feedback can and cannot tell you

OnePlan publishes an overall rating of 4.59 out of 5 from 23,019 reviews on its own website. It labels this as company-wide feedback, so it can include experiences with products other than pet insurance. It is useful evidence of a large customer-feedback history, but it is not a pet-only claims score.

The pet-specific comments on this page are linked to their public sources. Some praise service and successful claims. Public review platforms also contain complaints about claims, communication and expectations. That is normal for a large insurer and a reason to read beyond the headline rating.

Look for detail that matches your likely use: the plan named, whether pre-authorisation was obtained, what treatment was involved and what the policy said. A five-star service comment cannot prove that your future claim will be paid. A complaint cannot prove that every claim fails. The contract and the facts of the claim decide the outcome.

Test the fit

Questions to ask OnePlan before you buy

Treat the quote call as a fact-finding conversation, not a decision deadline. Ask for written answers where the policy wording is technical, and keep the documents you receive.

  • What is excluded because of my pet's current or previous health history?
  • Which waiting periods apply to the benefits I care about most?
  • What are the important sub-limits inside the overall annual limit?
  • How does my regular vet handle hospital deposits and Claim Card payments?
  • What is the after-hours process for hospital pre-authorisation?
  • How can I cancel, and when can the premium or policy terms change?
  • What documents will OnePlan need if I make a claim?

The bottom line

Our assessment of the trade-offs

OnePlan offers a wide price ladder, from accident-only cover at R80 per pet a month to Super from R430 with a published R75,000 overall annual limit. The Claim Card can make eligible day-to-day benefits more practical, while vets nationwide gives owners choice of practice.

The trade-offs are equally clear. Starting prices are not guaranteed quotes. Accident does not cover illness. Illness hospital admission has a 60-day waiting period. Benefits have conditions and limits, hospital care needs pre-authorisation, and existing conditions can affect what is covered.

That makes OnePlan worth considering, not automatically right for everyone. The quiz gives OnePlan enough context to discuss the available options. It does not purchase a policy, and you should still compare the written quote with your needs before agreeing.
