The breed
Why Boerboels need their own cover conversation
The Boerboel is a South African mastiff-type breed, bred to guard farms. Adults commonly weigh well over 50 kg. Size matters at the vet: medication is dosed by weight, and surgery on a big dog is a bigger job.
That doesn't make Boerboels unhealthy. It means it's worth knowing the risks and choosing cover with that in mind.

Health problems vets watch for in Boerboels
Not every Boerboel will have these. But they're worth knowing, and worth asking about when you get a quote.
- Hip and elbow dysplasia, which affect the joints
- Bloat (gastric dilatation-volvulus), a life-threatening emergency in deep-chested dogs
- Eyelid problems such as entropion
- Cruciate ligament injuries in heavy, active dogs
- Skin and ear infections

Bloat is an emergency. Go to a vet immediately if your dog shows these signs, especially after a big meal or exercise.

- Restlessness, drooling or pacing

Why to insure a Boerboel puppy early
Joint problems can show up in young dogs. If a vet notes a hip or elbow problem before cover starts, it may be treated as pre-existing. Starting early means waiting periods run while your puppy is healthy.

Accident-only cover from R80 per pet per month covers accident hospital admission only, not illness. For a large breed, many owners look at plans with illness and hospital cover and a higher annual limit. Super offers up to R75,000 annually overall.
