Dear Pet Parent Comparing Cover,

You've probably opened a few tabs already. Every insurer says they're the best.

That's not much help when you're trying to protect someone you love.

So let's skip the slogans and look at what actually matters when a vet bill lands.

Compare the cover, not the claim to be best.

“It gives me as a fur baby mom breathing space in medical situations.”

Limits, waiting periods, sub-limits and how claims get paid. Those decide whether a policy helps you on a bad day.

This guide walks you through each one in plain words, with OnePlan's published facts.

Then take the quick quiz. OnePlan may call to talk about your pet. No card and no policy bought by doing the quiz.

Quick answer

The best pet insurance in South Africa is the plan that covers what your pet is most likely to need at a premium you can sustain. Compare cover type, annual limits, sub-limits, waiting periods and claims. OnePlan plans start from R80 per pet per month, with limits up to R75,000 a year on Super. Terms apply.

The honest answer

The best pet insurance is the one that fits your pet

Search "best pet insurance South Africa" and you'll find a lot of lists. Most rank policies as if every pet were the same. They aren't.

A young Jack Russell, a senior cat and a Boerboel puppy need very different cover. So the useful question isn't "which policy is best?" It's "which plan pays for what my pet is most likely to need, at a price I can keep paying?"

This guide gives you the checklist to answer that yourself.

How to compare

Seven things to compare before you choose a plan

Put any two policies side by side and check these points in order. Write the answers down. It makes the call with an insurer much quicker.

  • What's covered: accident only, accident and illness, or day-to-day care too.
  • Overall annual limit: the most the plan pays in a year.
  • Sub-limits: smaller caps for specific benefits inside that annual limit.
  • Waiting periods: when each benefit actually starts after you join.
  • Existing and hereditary conditions: how they're assessed and excluded.
  • Claims: how the vet gets paid and what needs pre-authorisation.
  • Premium: the real monthly price for your pet, not the advertised "from" price.

Price and cover

Why the cheapest premium can cost you more

A low monthly premium feels like a win. Until the claim. If the plan only covers accidents, an illness stay in hospital is yours to pay. If the limit is low, a big surgery can run past it.

So start with the treatment you'd struggle to pay for, then find the lowest premium that covers it. That's value. A cheap plan that doesn't pay for the thing you fear isn't.

Why pet parents explore cover early

Accidents do not wait for payday

Accident hospital admission cover can start immediately, subject to eligibility and policy terms.

Keep the vet you already trust

OnePlan works with vets nationwide. The payment process can differ by vet and treatment.

Understand the details before you need them

Five plan options have different prices, benefits and limits. Waiting periods and exclusions matter too.

Tests and scans add up

Day-to-day benefits on some plans help with vet visits such as blood tests and x-rays, within plan limits.

Routine care counts too

Some plans include routine care benefits for things like vaccinations and deworming. Ask what yours includes.

Ask about dental and parasites

Dental and tick or flea care sit under specific benefits with their own limits. Check before you rely on them.

Real situations. Real outcomes.

The mechanism

How help with vet bills works

Two simple routes. Which one you use depends on the kind of care your pet needs.

Everyday eligible care

Pay at the vet with your Claim Card

  1. 1

    Request

Ask for available day-to-day funds in the OnePlan app.

  2. 2

    Load

Approved eligible funds go onto your OnePlan Claim Card.

  3. 3

    Pay

Use the card toward the vet bill. No waiting for a refund.

Hospital and emergencies

Get the admission pre-authorised

  1. 1

    Call

Contact OnePlan for pre-authorisation, after hours too.

  2. 2

    Check

OnePlan checks the admission against your policy.

  3. 3

    Treat

Your vet follows the approved payment process.

What you can claim depends on your plan. Hospital treatment needs pre-authorisation.

OnePlan, factually

How OnePlan's five plans differ

Cactus currently introduces pet enquiries to OnePlan. Here's what OnePlan publishes about its plans. Prices are starting prices per pet per month and depend on your pet's risk profile.

  • Accident: from R80. Accident cover only, no illness.
  • Primary, Hospital and Classic: from R160, R190 and R280, with broader benefits and higher limits.
  • Super: from R430, with an overall annual limit of up to R75,000.
  • Accident hospital admission: cover is immediate, subject to terms.
  • Illness hospital admission: 60-day waiting period.
  • Multi-pet: 10% off from the second pet on eligible Primary, Hospital, Classic and Super plans.

Claims in practice

Ask how the vet actually gets paid

Many owners only learn how claims work during an emergency. Ask first.

OnePlan uses a Claim Card for eligible day-to-day benefits: available funds can be requested through its app and loaded onto the card. Hospital care follows a separate pre-authorisation process. What's available depends on your plan, remaining benefit and policy rules.

Match the plan to the pet

A quick guide by life stage

Use this as a starting point for the conversation, not a final answer.

  • Puppies and kittens: start early so waiting periods run out while they're young and healthy.
  • Active adult dogs: look closely at accident and hospital cover and the annual limit.
  • Breeds with known health risks: ask how hereditary and congenital conditions are treated.
  • Senior pets: ask about entry-age rules and disclose the full medical history.

Take this to the call

Questions to ask before you sign

A clear answer to each of these beats any "best policy" list.

  • What is the exact premium for my pet's breed, age and history?
  • Does this plan cover illness hospital stays, or accidents only?
  • What are the annual limit and the sub-limits for likely treatment?
  • On what dates do my waiting periods end?
  • How will existing or hereditary conditions be handled?
  • Can I use my current vet, and how does payment work?

Common questions

There isn't one best policy for every pet. The best fit is the plan whose benefits, annual limit, waiting periods and premium match your pet's age, breed, health history and your budget. Compare those points side by side before you choose.

Understand your options before you need them

Take the quick pet quiz. It does not buy insurance. It gives OnePlan a starting point for a conversation about price, cover and claims.
