Dear Dog Owner,

It usually starts small. Your dog skips breakfast. Lies in the shade a bit longer. Doesn't run to the gate.

Then the gums look pale. Maybe the urine is darker than it should be.

Ask any South African vet and they'll tell you. That's when biliary needs attention today, not tomorrow.

The time to sort cover is before the tick season, not during it.

“It gives me as a fur baby mom breathing space in medical situations.”

Biliary is treated as an illness. With OnePlan, illness hospital cover currently has a 60-day waiting period.

So the owners who are covered when it matters are the ones who arranged it weeks earlier.

This guide explains the signs, the vet visit, and how cover works. Then take the quick quiz if you'd like OnePlan to talk you through options.

Quick answer

Tick bite fever in dogs usually means biliary (canine babesiosis), spread by ticks. Signs include lethargy, poor appetite, pale gums and dark urine. See a vet quickly. Under OnePlan, biliary falls under illness cover, which currently has a 60-day hospital waiting period, so cover must be in place before your dog gets sick.

What it is

What is tick bite fever in dogs?

In South Africa, when people say tick bite fever in dogs, they usually mean biliary. Vets call it canine babesiosis. A tick carries a tiny parasite that gets into the dog's red blood cells and destroys them.

Dogs can also pick up ehrlichiosis from ticks, which vets sometimes also call tick fever. Your vet will test to see which one it is. The treatment differs, which is why guessing at home is a bad idea.

Warning signs

The signs of biliary that should send you to the vet

Biliary can move fast. Some dogs look a little flat in the morning and are seriously ill by evening. If you notice these signs, especially in tick season, call your vet.

  • Low energy, sleeping more, not wanting to walk
  • Not eating, or only picking at food
  • Pale or yellowish gums
  • Red, brown or dark urine
  • Fever, fast breathing or weakness

At the vet

What happens when you take your dog in

The vet will usually examine your dog and take a small blood sample to look for the parasite and check how many red blood cells have been lost.

Mild cases may be treated and sent home. More serious cases can need a stay in hospital, a drip, and sometimes a blood transfusion. Your vet will explain the cost before treatment, so ask for an estimate.

Prevention

How to lower the risk

No method is perfect, but these steps help. Ask your vet which tick product suits your dog's size and age.

  • Use a vet-recommended tick and flea product all year, not only in summer
  • Check ears, armpits, between toes and under the collar after walks
  • Keep grass short and clear dense undergrowth where ticks hide
  • Know your vet's after-hours number before you need it

Why pet parents explore cover early

Accidents do not wait for payday

Accident hospital admission cover can start immediately, subject to eligibility and policy terms.

Keep the vet you already trust

OnePlan works with vets nationwide. The payment process can differ by vet and treatment.

Understand the details before you need them

Five plan options have different prices, benefits and limits. Waiting periods and exclusions matter too.

Tests and scans add up

Day-to-day benefits on some plans help with vet visits such as blood tests and x-rays, within plan limits.

Routine care counts too

Some plans include routine care benefits for things like vaccinations and deworming. Ask what yours includes.

Ask about dental and parasites

Dental and tick or flea care sit under specific benefits with their own limits. Check before you rely on them.

Real situations. Real outcomes.

Cover and timing

How OnePlan cover treats biliary

Biliary is an illness, not an accident. On OnePlan's current public information, accident hospital admission can be covered immediately, subject to terms, but illness hospital admission has a 60-day waiting period.

That means cover arranged after your dog falls ill won't help with that episode. If your dog has had biliary before, disclose it. Ask how a previous episode is treated before you sign.

Choosing

Which OnePlan plans cover illness?

Accident-only cover does not cover illness, so it would not help with biliary. OnePlan's other plans include illness benefits, within their limits and terms. Confirm this for the plan you choose. Each plan has its own annual limit, up to R75,000 overall on Super.

Ask the consultant about the hospital sub-limit, what happens if your dog needs a transfusion, and how pre-authorisation works after hours.

  • Does my plan cover illness hospital admission?
  • On what date does my illness waiting period end?
  • Is there a limit per condition or per year?
  • What do I do if my dog needs admission at night?

Common questions

It can be, on plans with illness cover, once the illness waiting period has passed. With OnePlan that waiting period is currently 60 days. Accident-only cover does not cover illness.
