Claims in plain language

How OnePlan's claim process differs by type of care

Eligible day-to-day care

OnePlan says eligible day-to-day claim funds can be loaded onto the OnePlan Claim Card, subject to available benefits and policy terms. Casualty and Pet Med Savings claims can also be preloaded through the app where eligible.

Hospital care

Hospital claims require pre-authorisation. At preferred vets, approved admissions may proceed without a deposit. For qualifying pre-approved admissions, OnePlan says deposit assistance of up to R5,000 may be available.

Can I use my own vet?

OnePlan says you can use vets nationwide in South Africa. Preferred vets can make hospital pre-authorisation and deposit handling simpler, but you are not limited to a single vet network.

What about pre-existing conditions?

A pre-existing or hereditary condition does not automatically mean your pet cannot be insured. Waiting periods, underwriting and exclusions apply, and the policy schedule determines what is covered.

More than one pet?

OnePlan currently offers 10% off each pet from the second pet onward on eligible Primary, Hospital, Classic and Super plans. The Accident Plan is excluded from this discount.

Pet insurance FAQ

Common questions before choosing cover

Is there a waiting period for OnePlan pet insurance?

Current OnePlan public plan information shows immediate accident hospital admission cover, a 60-day waiting period for illness hospital admission, and different waiting periods for other benefits. Policy terms and underwriting apply.

Can I use my own vet?

OnePlan says customers can use vets nationwide in South Africa. The hospital pre-authorisation and deposit process can differ between preferred and non-preferred vets.

Does OnePlan cover pre-existing conditions?

A pre-existing or hereditary condition does not automatically mean a pet cannot be insured. Certain conditions are subject to underwriting, exclusions and a 12-month period before they may become eligible, depending on the policy schedule.

Do South African vets get paid directly by pet insurance?

Most South African vets expect payment when your pet is discharged. With OnePlan, eligible day-to-day claim funds can be loaded onto the OnePlan Claim Card, and hospital admissions need pre-authorisation. At preferred vets, approved admissions may go ahead without a deposit.

Is tick bite fever (biliary) covered by pet insurance in South Africa?

Tick bite fever is an illness, so it falls under illness benefits rather than accident cover. On OnePlan plans that include illness, the 60-day illness hospital waiting period applies first. The Accident Plan does not cover illness.

Are snake bites and car accidents covered?

Injuries from accidents are covered under accident benefits, subject to plan limits and policy terms. OnePlan's current public information shows accident hospital admission cover starts immediately.

Can I get pet insurance anywhere in South Africa?

Yes. OnePlan offers cover nationwide, from Cape Town and Johannesburg to Durban, Gqeberha and smaller towns, and says you can use vets across South Africa.

Is pet medical aid the same as pet insurance in South Africa?

People often say pet medical aid, but in South Africa these products are pet insurance policies, not medical schemes. The policy wording, benefits and limits decide what is paid.
