Cat insurance in South Africa: a plain guide for cat parents

Cats hide pain until it's serious. That's why so many cat vet visits start as emergencies. Here's how cover works and what to ask.

Quick answer

Cat insurance helps pay vet bills for accidents and illnesses, depending on the plan. OnePlan offers five plans for cats and dogs, from accident-only at R80 per pet per month up to Super with a R75,000 overall annual limit. Accident hospital cover starts from day one, subject to terms, and illness hospital cover has a 60-day waiting period. Your price depends on your cat's age, breed and history.

Dear Cat Parent,

Your cat doesn't tell you when something's wrong.

They hide it. They go quiet. They sleep under the bed.

By the time you notice, it's often a vet visit you didn't plan for.

Cats hide illness well. Your cover shouldn't be hiding too.

Cats aren't small dogs. Their emergencies are different, and some of them move fast.

This guide covers the problems vets see most in South African cats, and the questions that decide whether a claim goes smoothly.

Why cats

Why cat owners get caught off guard

Cats are experts at hiding pain. It's an instinct. A sick cat often just eats a bit less and sleeps a bit more.

Indoor cats aren't risk-free either. Urinary blockages, kidney disease and dental problems happen to house cats too. Outdoor cats add road accidents, fights and bite abscesses.

Common problems

What sends cats to the vet in South Africa

These come up again and again. Not every cat will have them.

  • Urinary blockage, especially in male cats
  • Kidney disease in older cats
  • Dental disease and tooth resorption
  • Bite wounds and abscesses from fights
  • Road accidents and falls
  • Swallowed string, thread or hair ties

Warning signs

Signs your cat needs a vet soon

If you notice any of these, call your vet. Don't wait a few days to see if it passes.

  • Straining in the litter box
  • Not eating for more than a day
  • Hiding and not coming out
  • Breathing with the mouth open
  • Drinking much more than usual
  • Repeated vomiting

Why pet parents explore cover early

Accidents do not wait for payday

Accident hospital admission cover can start immediately, subject to eligibility and policy terms.

Keep the vet you already trust

OnePlan works with vets nationwide. The payment process can differ by vet and treatment.

Understand the details before you need them

Five plan options have different prices, benefits and limits. Waiting periods and exclusions matter too.

Tests and scans add up

Day-to-day benefits on some plans help with vet visits such as blood tests and x-rays, within plan limits.

Routine care counts too

Some plans include routine care benefits for things like vaccinations and deworming. Ask what yours includes.

Ask about dental and parasites

Dental and tick or flea care sit under specific benefits with their own limits. Check before you rely on them.

Real situations. Real outcomes.

Common questions

OnePlan's accident-only plan starts from R80 per pet per month, with broader plans from R160 to R430 per month. Your cat's price depends on age, breed, history and plan.

Understand your options before you need them

Take the quick pet quiz. It does not buy insurance. It gives OnePlan a starting point for a conversation about price, cover and claims.

P.S. In a rush? Here's the short version

Vet bills add up fast. Bloat surgery alone can cost R16,000 to R20,000 at a referral hospital. OnePlan cover starts from R80 per pet a month, depending on your pet, with limits up to R75,000 a year on Super.

P.P.S. Timing matters

Pre-existing conditions are generally excluded, so once a vet notes a symptom, that problem may not be covered. Illness hospital cover also has a 60-day waiting period. The best time to sort cover is while your pet is healthy, not in the waiting room at 2am.

P.P.P.S. There's no risk in looking
