Dear Pet Parent,

It's late. Your dog's belly is swollen and they keep trying to vomit.

You've read about bloat. You know it's serious.

You're in the car before you've had time to think about the bill.

With bloat, minutes matter. Knowing your cover in advance helps you decide fast.

“It gives me as a fur baby mom breathing space in medical situations.”

Here's a real number. Valley Farm Animal Hospital's referral price list (November 2025) puts it at R16,000 to R20,000.

Your vet's quote may be higher or lower. Fees vary by practice, region and how serious things are.

If you'd like cover in place before the next emergency, take the quick quiz and OnePlan will talk you through options.

Quick answer

Published South African figures put it at R16,000 to R20,000 (Valley Farm Animal Hospital's referral price list (November 2025)). Your bill depends on how sick your pet is, how long they stay in hospital, tests, medication and whether a specialist is needed. Ask your vet for a written estimate. Insurance only helps if cover is already active and the waiting period has passed. OnePlan publishes a 60-day illness hospital waiting period and plans from R80 per pet per month.

The emergency

What is bloat (GDV)?

Gastric dilatation-volvulus happens when the stomach fills with gas and can twist. It cuts off blood flow and needs emergency treatment, often surgery.

Large, deep-chested breeds such as Great Danes, German Shepherds and Boerboels are at higher risk.

Warning signs

Signs of bloat: go to a vet now

Don't wait to see if it passes.

  • Swollen, tight belly
  • Retching with nothing coming up
  • Drooling, pacing or restlessness
  • Weakness or collapse

The bill

What drives the cost

Valley Farm Animal Hospital in Pretoria lists GDV surgery including gastropexy at R16,000 to R20,000, if the dog is medically stable. A laparoscopic gastropexy adds R10,000.

Unstable dogs need stabilising first, and some need part of the stomach or the spleen removed. The same list puts a splenectomy at R25,000 and a gastrectomy at R26,000. Bills can climb well past the base figure.

After-hours emergency fees come on top of that.

These are published estimates, not a quote. Ask your vet for a written estimate and what could change it.

  • Emergency or after-hours fees
  • Surgery and anaesthetic
  • Days in hospital and monitoring
  • Your dog's size and weight
  • Complications after surgery

Why pet parents explore cover early

Accidents do not wait for payday

Accident hospital admission cover can start immediately, subject to eligibility and policy terms.

Keep the vet you already trust

OnePlan works with vets nationwide. The payment process can differ by vet and treatment.

Understand the details before you need them

Five plan options have different prices, benefits and limits. Waiting periods and exclusions matter too.

Tests and scans add up

Day-to-day benefits on some plans help with vet visits such as blood tests and x-rays, within plan limits.

Routine care counts too

Some plans include routine care benefits for things like vaccinations and deworming. Ask what yours includes.

Ask about dental and parasites

Dental and tick or flea care sit under specific benefits with their own limits. Check before you rely on them.

Real situations. Real outcomes.

Insurance

Does pet insurance help with this?

Whether bloat counts as an accident or illness depends on the plan's terms. Ask OnePlan which waiting period applies and what the surgery limit is.

For large breeds, many owners look at plans with higher hospital limits. OnePlan's Super plan offers up to R75,000 annually overall.
