Dog and cat dental cleaning and extractions in South Africa

Bad breath, a sore mouth, a dental estimate you didn't expect. Here's what drives the cost of pet dental work and what insurance usually covers.

Quick answer

There's no single published price. Your bill depends on how sick your pet is, how long they stay in hospital, tests, medication and whether a specialist is needed. Ask your vet for a written estimate. Insurance only helps if cover is already active and the waiting period has passed. OnePlan publishes a 60-day illness hospital waiting period and plans from R80 per pet per month.

Dear Pet Parent,

You went in for a quick check-up.

You came out with a dental estimate and a list of teeth that need to go.

Nobody warned you it could cost this much.

Dental work is one of the most common surprise bills. Know your cover before the estimate.

“It gives me as a fur baby mom breathing space in medical situations.”

We haven't found a published South African price we trust, so we won't guess one.

Your vet's quote may be higher or lower. Fees vary by practice, region and how serious things are.

If you'd like cover in place before the next emergency, take the quick quiz and OnePlan will talk you through options.

The problem

Why pets need dental work

Tartar builds up on teeth and can lead to gum disease, loose teeth and infection. Small breeds and older cats are especially prone.

Proper cleaning and extractions are done under general anaesthetic, often with dental X-rays. That's why the bill is bigger than a normal consult.

Warning signs

Signs your pet's mouth is sore

Pets hide pain well. Look for these.

  • Bad breath
  • Red or bleeding gums
  • Brown tartar on the teeth
  • Chewing on one side or dropping food
  • Pawing at the mouth

The bill

What drives the cost

Ask your vet for a written estimate before treatment where you can. Emergencies often run past the first figure you hear.

Every case is different, so the final bill depends on your pet.

  • Anaesthetic and monitoring
  • Dental X-rays
  • How many teeth are removed
  • Pain medication and antibiotics
  • Your pet's age and other health problems

Why pet parents explore cover early

Accidents do not wait for payday

Accident hospital admission cover can start immediately, subject to eligibility and policy terms.

Keep the vet you already trust

OnePlan works with vets nationwide. The payment process can differ by vet and treatment.

Understand the details before you need them

Five plan options have different prices, benefits and limits. Waiting periods and exclusions matter too.

Tests and scans add up

Day-to-day benefits on some plans help with vet visits such as blood tests and x-rays, within plan limits.

Routine care counts too

Some plans include routine care benefits for things like vaccinations and deworming. Ask what yours includes.

Ask about dental and parasites

Dental and tick or flea care sit under specific benefits with their own limits. Check before you rely on them.

Real situations. Real outcomes.

Insurance

Does pet insurance help with this?

Routine cleaning is usually treated as preventive care, and many plans don't cover it. Dental injuries or illness may be treated differently.

Ask OnePlan exactly what dental cover your plan includes, and whether it's routine care, injury or illness.

P.S. In a rush? Here's the short version

Vet bills add up fast. Bloat surgery alone can cost R16,000 to R20,000 at a referral hospital. OnePlan cover starts from R80 per pet a month, depending on your pet, with limits up to R75,000 a year on Super.

P.P.S. Timing matters

Pre-existing conditions are generally excluded, so once a vet notes a symptom, that problem may not be covered. Illness hospital cover also has a 60-day waiting period. The best time to sort cover is while your pet is healthy, not in the waiting room at 2am.

P.P.P.S. There's no risk in looking

The quiz doesn't buy anything or ask for bank details. OnePlan calls you with real figures, and you decide.
