Dear Dog Mom or Dad,

Your dog doesn't know about budgets. They know walks, dinner time and the sound of your car in the driveway.

They also chew things they shouldn't. They jump off things they shouldn't. And sometimes they get sick for no reason at all.

That's dogs. It's part of why we love them.

Breed, age and timing all change the picture.

“It gives me as a fur baby mom breathing space in medical situations.”
Rene N, pet owner · published customer feedback

A puppy, a big adult breed and a senior dog each need a different conversation about cover. Waiting periods mean timing matters too.

This guide walks you through it in plain words. What dog cover costs. How breed and age come in. When cover starts.

Then take the quick quiz. OnePlan may call about cover for your dog. No card and no policy bought by doing the quiz.

Quick answer

OnePlan dog cover starts at R80 per pet per month for accident-only cover, with broader plans from R160 to R430 per month and annual limits up to R75,000. Breed, age and plan choice set the final price. Waiting periods and terms apply.

Why dog owners insure

Dogs don't plan their emergencies

Dogs run, chew, dig and jump. That's the joy of them. It's also why so many vet visits start with 'he got into something'.

Swallowed objects, road accidents, bites, tick-borne illness and sudden stomach trouble can all mean hospital care. And in South Africa, that bill is yours unless you're covered.

Insurance doesn't stop the scare. It stops money from being the thing that decides the treatment.

Breed and age

How your dog's breed and age change the picture

Bigger breeds and breeds with known health tendencies often cost more to cover. Age matters too. Older dogs generally cost more, and age rules apply when you first take out cover.

That's why the advertised starting price is only a guide. The quiz asks about your dog so a OnePlan consultant can talk to you about real numbers.

  • Puppies: start early so waiting periods run out while your dog is young and healthy.
  • Adult dogs: compare annual limits, not just premiums.
  • Senior dogs: ask about age rules and how existing conditions are treated.

A dog's needs change

When should cover start for a puppy, adult or senior dog?

For a puppy, the advantage of starting early is time. Waiting periods can run while the dog is young and well, before a new symptom becomes part of the medical history. That does not mean every future condition will be covered. Underwriting, exclusions and the selected plan still apply.

For an adult dog, look at lifestyle as well as age. A dog that hikes, swims, travels or plays with other dogs may face different accident exposure from a quiet indoor companion. The policy does not price your affection. It prices risk, the selected benefits and the dog's profile.

For a senior dog, ask about entry-age rules before doing anything else. Then disclose the full medical history. Clear disclosure gives the insurer the information it needs to explain what will and will not be covered. Hiding an old condition can cause trouble when you claim.

Ask, don't assume

What breed means in a dog-insurance quote

Breed can affect a quote because some dogs have a higher likelihood of particular health problems. Size, age and medical history also matter. But a broad internet list cannot tell you how OnePlan will assess your individual dog.

Use the quote conversation to name your dog's exact breed or mix and disclose past symptoms, medication and vet visits. Ask how hereditary and congenital conditions are treated under the plan you are considering. Do not rely on a salesperson's general reassurance when the policy wording can give you a precise answer.

Why pet parents explore cover early

Accidents do not wait for payday

Accident hospital admission cover can start immediately, subject to eligibility and policy terms.

Keep the vet you already trust

OnePlan works with vets nationwide. The payment process can differ by vet and treatment.

Understand the details before you need them

Five plan options have different prices, benefits and limits. Waiting periods and exclusions matter too.

Tests and scans add up

Day-to-day benefits on some plans help with vet visits such as blood tests and x-rays, within plan limits.

Routine care counts too

Some plans include routine care benefits for things like vaccinations and deworming. Ask what yours includes.

Ask about dental and parasites

Dental and tick or flea care sit under specific benefits with their own limits. Check before you rely on them.

Real situations. Real outcomes.

The mechanism

How help with vet bills works

Two simple routes. Which one you use depends on the kind of care your pet needs.

Everyday eligible care

Pay at the vet with your Claim Card

  1. 1

    Request

Ask for available day-to-day funds in the OnePlan app.

  2. 2

    Load

Approved eligible funds go onto your OnePlan Claim Card.

  3. 3

    Pay

Use the card toward the vet bill. No waiting for a refund.

Hospital and emergencies

Get the admission pre-authorised

  1. 1

    Call

Contact OnePlan for pre-authorisation, after hours too.

  2. 2

    Check

OnePlan checks the admission against your policy.

  3. 3

    Treat

Your vet follows the approved payment process.

What you can claim depends on your plan. Hospital treatment needs pre-authorisation.

Timing

When cover kicks in for your dog

OnePlan's current public information shows different start dates for different benefits.

  • Accident hospital admission: immediate, subject to terms.
  • Illness hospital admission: 60 days.
  • Casualty and Pet Med Savings: 30 days.
  • Kennel cover: 60 days.
  • Burial and cremation: 12 months.

Choosing a plan

A simple way to choose dog cover

Ask yourself one question. If your dog needed surgery tomorrow, how much could you pay without stress? If the answer is 'not much', look at plans with hospital cover and a higher annual limit.

If you mostly want protection against a serious accident, accident-only cover from R80 may do the job. It won't cover illness, so be sure that's the trade-off you want.

More than one dog

How to compare cover for a multi-dog household

You do not have to choose the same plan simply because your dogs share a home. A young active dog and an older dog may need different conversations. Ask for the premium and benefits for each dog, then add the household total.

OnePlan currently publishes a 10% discount from the second pet on eligible Primary, Hospital, Classic and Super plans. Accident is excluded. Confirm how OnePlan orders the pets for the discount and whether each dog's selected plan qualifies.

Also think about simultaneous costs. Dogs in one household can be exposed to the same accident, toxin or contagious illness. An annual limit belongs to the insured pet and policy terms apply, so ask how separate claims would be handled.

Take this to the call

Your dog-cover decision checklist

A clear answer to each question is more useful than a promise that a plan is comprehensive. Write the answers down and compare them with the policy documents OnePlan sends you.

  • What is the exact premium for my dog's age, breed and medical history?
  • Does this plan cover illness hospital admission as well as accidents?
  • What are the overall limit and the sub-limits for likely benefits?
  • Which waiting periods apply, and on what dates do they end?
  • How are existing, hereditary and congenital conditions assessed?
  • What must I do before a hospital admission, including after hours?
  • Can I use my current vet, and how does that practice handle payment?

Be ready before the emergency

What to keep where you can find it

Save OnePlan's claims contact details and your policy number on your phone. Make sure another adult in the household knows where they are. In an emergency, tell the vet that you have cover and contact OnePlan for the required pre-authorisation before hospital treatment where possible.

Keep invoices, clinical notes and requested documents. For eligible day-to-day benefits, OnePlan says available funds can be requested through its app and loaded onto the Claim Card. Hospital care follows a separate pre-authorisation process. What is available depends on the plan, remaining benefit and policy rules.
