Snake bite in dogs: what South African owners should do in the first hour

Puff adders, cobras and mambas share our gardens and trails. Here's how to spot a bite, what to do on the way to the vet, and how cover helps.

Quick answer

If a snake bites your dog, keep it calm and still and get to a vet immediately. Don't cut the wound or use a tourniquet. A snake bite is usually treated as an accident, and OnePlan accident hospital admission can be covered from day one, subject to terms and plan limits.

Dear Dog Owner,

Most snake bites happen close to home. A dog noses into a flowerbed, yelps, and twenty minutes later its face is swelling.

Nobody plans for that afternoon. But you can plan for the bill.

Accident cover works best when it's already in place.

“It gives me as a fur baby mom breathing space in medical situations.”

The risk

Why snake bites are a real risk for South African dogs

Dogs are curious. They sniff, dig and chase, which puts their faces and legs right where snakes hide. Gardens, smallholdings, hiking trails and holiday spots all carry risk, especially in warmer months.

Different venoms do different things. Puff adder bites cause painful swelling and tissue damage. Cobra and mamba venom affects the nerves and can stop breathing. Either way, time matters.

Warning signs

The signs of a snake bite that mean go to the vet now

You might not see the snake. If your dog shows any of these after being outside, treat it as an emergency.

  • Sudden swelling on the face, neck or a leg
  • Puncture marks, bleeding or bruising
  • Drooling, vomiting or trembling
  • Weakness, wobbling or collapse
  • Droopy eyelids or trouble breathing
  • Red, painful eyes after a spitting cobra

First aid

What to do on the way to the vet

Keep your dog as still and calm as you can. Carry a small dog. Phone the vet so they're ready. Don't try to catch or kill the snake. A photo from a safe distance helps, but it's not worth a second bite.

Skip the old tricks. Cutting the wound, sucking out venom, ice and tight tourniquets can all make things worse.

Why pet parents explore cover early

Accidents do not wait for payday

Accident hospital admission cover can start immediately, subject to eligibility and policy terms.

Keep the vet you already trust

OnePlan works with vets nationwide. The payment process can differ by vet and treatment.

Understand the details before you need them

Five plan options have different prices, benefits and limits. Waiting periods and exclusions matter too.

Tests and scans add up

Day-to-day benefits on some plans help with vet visits such as blood tests and x-rays, within plan limits.

Routine care counts too

Some plans include routine care benefits for things like vaccinations and deworming. Ask what yours includes.

Ask about dental and parasites

Dental and tick or flea care sit under specific benefits with their own limits. Check before you rely on them.

Real situations. Real outcomes.

Cover

How OnePlan cover fits a snake bite

A snake bite is usually an accident, not an illness. On OnePlan's current public information, accident hospital admission can be covered immediately, subject to terms, while illness admission has a 60-day waiting period.

Hospital stays, antivenom and intensive care add up fast. Each plan has its own annual limit, up to R75,000 overall on Super. Ask what your plan pays for emergency admission.

  • Is a snake bite treated as an accident on my plan?
  • What is my hospital limit per year?
  • How does pre-authorisation work at night or weekends?
  • Can I use any vet or emergency hospital?

P.S. In a rush? Here's the short version

Vet bills add up fast. Bloat surgery alone can cost R16,000 to R20,000 at a referral hospital. OnePlan cover starts from R80 per pet a month, depending on your pet, with limits up to R75,000 a year on Super.

P.P.S. Timing matters

Pre-existing conditions are generally excluded, so once a vet notes a symptom, that problem may not be covered. Illness hospital cover also has a 60-day waiting period. The best time to sort cover is while your pet is healthy, not in the waiting room at 2am.

P.P.P.S. There's no risk in looking

The quiz doesn't buy anything or ask for bank details. OnePlan calls you with real figures, and you decide.
